The UK and US have signed a landmark bilateral deal that will preserve no tariffs on British drug products entering the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has pledged to boost spending on medicines through the NHS. This commitment guarantees that duties on these vital goods will stay at nothing for a timeframe of the next three years.

This agreement comes after previous statements to dramatically increase duties on patented drug imports, with increases floated as high as double the cost.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom reinforces the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue fairness to American-British drug exports," a release declared.

Commercial Impact

Medicines constitute one of the Britain's largest exports to the United States, which is by far the primary buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures indicate that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK exported pharmaceutical products valued at billions to the US. This value represented a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This deal protects work, stimulates investment and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key British Pledges

The agreement involves several key commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it considers new treatments to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to double overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage drug companies must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, repayments topped twenty percent.

Industry Background

The deal comes amid a protracted dispute between the drug companies and the UK government over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were heightened by claims that US consumers were charged several times more for the identical medicines than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while substantial funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

One official acknowledged that the NHS must invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
